I recently met with French fashion designer Alice Balas<\/a> at her store in Le Marais<\/em> to talk about her past and what inspired her to launch her eponymous fashion line, with a focus on leather craftsmanship.<\/p>\n

What was your background before launching your brand?<\/h3>\n

I started as a photography and art director\u2019s assistant, then I became an art director myself at a digital communication agency in London. I collaborated with S\u00f8lve Sundsb\u00f8, Peter Lindbergh, Donald Schneider, as well as other brands like Gucci, Diesel, Comme des Gar\u00e7ons, Olympia Le Tan, Dior Perfumes, and Lanc\u00f4me. In 2015, I came back to Paris to take on an entrepreneurial adventure and launch my own brand of custom leather jackets.<\/p>\n

Why did you choose to launch a brand of leather jackets specifically?<\/h3>\n

The project came about from my personal interest. At the time, I couldn\u2019t find a leather jacket that was not too rock or too masculin. I was looking for a flexible piece, easy to wear and elegant, in which you feel at ease and strong at the same time. As I couldn\u2019t find this kind of jacket, I decided to create it.<\/p>\n

Where do you find inspiration for your designs? Is there someone in particular who wears the leather jacket somewhat iconically?<\/h3>\n

I find inspiration everywhere! I wasn\u2019t looking to reinvent the style, but to give it a modern and timeless elegant twist. For that, I\u2019m inspired by today\u2019s woman, today\u2019s modern time where we live at 100 mph without compromising style and femininity. As well as the modern man who is an adventurer and a bit dandy.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s too hard to choose one person, but it\u2019s true that I\u2019ve always had this image of Kate Moss in mind, wearing the leather jacket with so much confidence. I\u2019m also inspired by Charlotte Rampling, Steve McQueen, Charlotte and Serge Gainsbourg\u2026 I often look at this generation of icons, who inspire me a lot.<\/p>\n

Has the personalization aspect always been part of the brand? Why did you start to offer the possibility of personalizing a jacket in detail?<\/h3>\n

Yes, personalization is at the heart of the brand, since the beginning! Each person is different and deserves to have a jacket in their own image, to decide on the details, its lining, and everything. Moreso, this experience of duo-designing is a moment that I love to share with each client. Today, just like the first day, I wish to breathe uniqueness into leather pieces which are often black and standardized. The idea of creating each piece as unique in Paris allows me to make that possible.<\/p>\n

Is it important for you to produce the jackets in France? Who makes the jackets in your workshop today?<\/h3>\n

Yes, very! Leather artisans are disappearing and I\u2019m so proud to be a part of the brands who try to maintain it on French soil. It equally gives me much flexibility. If I didn\u2019t manufacture inside Parisian workshops, I couldn\u2019t produce each jacket according to the style of each client. I also find it fits in a sustainable approach : we have no overstock, we don\u2019t create any waste.<\/p>\n

Is there one or several leather jackets that are somewhat \u201cnecessary\u201d for a woman\u2019s wardrobe, according to you? What are they?<\/h3>\n

Everyone is different, I don\u2019t wish to impose something on my clients. That said, it\u2019s true that my project started with the iconic \u201cBiker\u201d jacket and it remains today the most popular product! Our PERF 009.1 model is otherwise an iconic Alice Balas that I recommend to our clients who wish to start with a timeless piece from the brand. It unites all our characteristics : a mix of 4 leathers, champagne leather, a colorful lining…<\/p>\n

What are your own wardrobe \u201cessentials\u201d or basics?<\/h3>\n

A leather jacket, of course!<\/p>\n

Day to day, I love to wear it with a pair of leather boots, jeans, and a little crossbody bag. It\u2019s kind of my uniform: simple, elegant and comfortable. That\u2019s my vision of daily style. Clothing is made for living, not for holding us back. I like to have this feeling across my leather pieces, and my personal style.<\/p>\n

Quel \u00e9tait ton parcours avant de lancer ta marque?<\/h3>\n

J\u2019ai commenc\u00e9 en tant qu\u2019assistante de photographes et de directeurs artistiques, puis je suis devenue moi-m\u00eame directrice artistique dans une agence de communication digitale \u00e0 Londres. J\u2019ai collabor\u00e9 avec S\u00f8lve Sundsb\u00f8, Peter Lindbergh, Donald Schneider et des marques comme Gucci, Diesel, Comme des Gar\u00e7ons, Olympia Le Tan, Dior Perfumes, ou Lanc\u00f4me.
\nEn 2015, je reviens \u00e0 Paris pour me lancer dans l\u2019aventure entrepreneuriale en cr\u00e9ant ma marque \u00e9ponyme de vestes en cuir singuli\u00e8res et uniques.<\/p>\n

Pourquoi as tu choisi de lancer une marque \u00e0 toi sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 des vestes en cuir?<\/h3>\n

Le projet est parti d\u2019une envie personnelle. A l\u2019\u00e9poque, je ne trouvais pas de veste en cuir qui ne soit pas trop rock ou masculine. Je cherchais une pi\u00e8ce souple, facile \u00e0 porter et \u00e9l\u00e9gante dans laquelle on se sente \u00e0 la fois \u00e0 l\u2019aise, et forte. Comme je ne trouvais pas cette pi\u00e8ce, j\u2019ai d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de la cr\u00e9er.<\/p>\n

O\u00f9 est-ce que tu trouves de l’inspiration lors de la conception? Est-ce qu’il y a quelqu’un en particulier qui porte la veste en cuir iconiquement?<\/h3>\n

L\u2019inspiration se trouve partout ! Je ne cherche pas \u00e0 r\u00e9-inventer la mode, mais \u00e0 donner un twist moderne et \u00e9l\u00e9gant \u00e0 des intemporels. Pour cela, je m\u2019inspire de la femme d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui, cette amazone des temps modernes qui vit \u00e0 1000 \u00e0 l\u2019heure sans compromettre son style et sa f\u00e9minit\u00e9. Ainsi que de l\u2019homme moderne, un aventurier un brin dandy.
\nC\u2019est trop dur de choisir une personne mais c\u2019est vrai que j\u2019ai toujours cette image de Kate Moss en t\u00eate portant la veste en cuir avec tant d\u2019aplomb. Je suis \u00e9galement inspir\u00e9e par Charlotte Rampling, Steve McQueen, Charlotte et Serge Gainsbourg\u2026 Je regarde souvent des photos de toute cette g\u00e9n\u00e9ration d\u2019ic\u00f4nes, elle m\u2019inspire beaucoup.<\/p>\n

L’aspect personnalisation faisait-il toujours partie de la marque? Pourquoi as-tu commenc\u00e9 d’offrir la possibilit\u00e9 de personnaliser une veste et toutes ses d\u00e9tails?<\/h3>\n

Oui, la personnalisation est au coeur du projet et ce depuis le d\u00e9but ! Chaque personne est diff\u00e9rente et m\u00e9rite donc d\u2019avoir une veste \u00e0 son image, de choisir ses d\u00e9tails, sa doublure, etc. De plus, ce moment de cr\u00e9ation \u00e0 deux est un moment que j\u2019adore partager avec chaque client. Aujourd\u2019hui, comme au premier jour de ce projet, je souhaite insuffler de la singularit\u00e9 dans les pi\u00e8ces en cuir qui sont trop souvent noir et standardis\u00e9es. Le fait de produire chaque pi\u00e8ce \u00e0 l\u2019unite \u00e0 Paris me permet de rendre cela possible.<\/p>\n

Est-ce que c’\u00e9tait important pour toi de fabriquer les vestes en France? Qui fait les vestes dans ton atelier aujourd’hui?<\/h3>\n

Oui, tr\u00e8s ! L\u2019artisanat autours du v\u00eatement en cuir se perd et je suis fi\u00e8re de faire partie des marques qui tentent de le maintenir pr\u00e9sent sur le territoire Fran\u00e7ais. Cela me donne \u00e9galement beaucoup de flexibilit\u00e9. Si je ne produisais pas dans des ateliers Parisiens, je ne pourrais pas fabriquer chaque veste \u00e0 la demande pour chaque client. Je trouve aussi que cela s\u2019inscrit dans une d\u00e9marche durable : nous ne produisons pas d\u2019overstock, nous ne cr\u00e9ons pas \u00e0 perte.<\/p>\n

Est-ce qu’il ya une ou plusieurs vestes en cuir un peu “obligatoire” pour la garde de robe d’une femme \u00e0 ton avis? Elles sont lesquelles?<\/h3>\n

Chaque personne est diff\u00e9rente, je ne souhaite donc pas imposer quoi que ce soit \u00e0 mes clients. Ceci dit, c\u2019est vrai que le projet a commenc\u00e9 avec l\u2019iconique veste Biker et c\u2019est encore aujourd\u2019hui notre produit le plus populaire. Notre mod\u00e8le PERF 009.1 est d\u2019ailleurs un iconique ALICE BALAS que je recommande aux clientes qui souhaite commencer avec un intemporel de la marque. Elle r\u00e9unit tous nos codes : un m\u00e9lange de 4 cuirs, le cuir champagne, la doublure color\u00e9e\u2026<\/p>\n

Quels sont tes propres “essentiels” de ta garde-robe, les basiques ?<\/h3>\n

Une veste en cuir bien s\u00fbr ! \ud83d\ude42
\nAu quotidien, j\u2019aime la porter avec une paire de bottines en cuir, un jeans, et une petit sac en bandouli\u00e8re. C\u2019est un peu mon uniforme : simple, \u00e9l\u00e9gant et confortable. C\u2019est ma vision du style au quotidien. Le v\u00eatement est fait pour vivre, pas pour nous contraindre.
